Thanksgiving 2009

We have had a busy, fun-filled week! My in-laws were here for Thanksgiving this year. They came Sunday and stayed until this morning. I am certain we wore them out with all of the sight-seeing we did! They got to see all of the monuments up close and personal, Arlington National Cemetary, the White House, a wax museum, Monticello, Mount Vernon, the Kennedy Center (The Snark Ensemble), my classroom (I’m sure this was the highlight of their trip!), the Capitol, Ford Theater (Christmas Carol)… I am sure there is something I am leaving out! We took them to eat at a few of our favorite places:
Ben’s Chili Bowl
, Bistrot Du Coin, Bread and Chocolate, Five Guys, and Old Ebbitt Grill.

On Wednesday, we made the trip to Monticello. This was a first for all of us. I really enjoyed our tour, but I think I like Mount Vernon better. There are things I like about each. Monticello: views, house was very interesting, herb garden. Mount Vernon: extensive, beautiful grounds, interesting museum, sheep, view of the Potomac is amazing and I like all of the bedrooms in the house.

Moving on. The Thanksgiving meal was quite interesting. I got up early Wednesday morning before we went to Monticello to get some of the cooking out of the way. I made the sweet
potato casserole, strawberry salad, cornbread for the dressing (in VA they call it stuffing) and the broccoli and rice casserole. Wednesday night when we got back, I made the deviled eggs,
Jiffy Diffy, dressing (stuffing) and pumpkin pie. Thursday morning I got up early and drove to Bethesda, MD to run a 10k. That was a blast (cold and **HILLY**, but fun!). I definitely earned my Thanksgiving meal. Anyway–I got back home and got busy in the kitchen after the race. I got the turkey out and realized I bought an entire turkey instead of a breast. Oops. No problem, I thought. I’ll just quadruple the glaze recipe and everything will be fine. I preheated the oven and doused that turkey in olive oil, pepper and a little salt. I was completely grossed out by the legs and wings. Maybe this is why I tried to stick with a breast. So I popped the turkey in the oven and set the timer for 2 hours. It was a small turkey. Hence the reason I mistook it for a breast. So the time was ticking away and I opened the oven door a few times to check on it. Each time I opened it, I thought, “That oven doesn’t feel very hot.” I dismissed the thought telling myself the oven was only on 325. After awhile I wasn’t smelling the turkey. I went in to check on it again and realized that the turkey had been in an oven for an hour and a half that wasn’t even ON. UGH!!! So not only did I buy an entire turkey instead of a breast, but I was trying to roast a turkey in an oven that was OFF. This will teach my crew to put me in charge of the meal again!!

I got desperate and went downstairs to talk to our concierge. No one was using the oven in our club room, so Mel, Brenda and I took the dressing and the casseroles downstairs to that oven. We left the turkey in our oven (which was on at this point). I thought everything was going to be fine (because Jim said it would be), but when I thought everything was ready, Richard tried to carve the turkey and it wasn’t done. We had Thanksgiving with no turkey! Thank goodness I put chicken in my dressing and we had PLENTY of other food. It’s also lucky for me that everyone was so nice about the turkey fiasco!

This year I am thankful for: my family, my husband’s unconditional love for me, our sweet Olivia, friendships and my new school.

We had a great time together. Olivia loves our friends, Jim and Brenda. She gets really excited around Brenda, but Jim has the opposite effect on her. She snuggled right up next to him, flipped herself over on her back and went to sleep!

Here are some pictures from Monticello and Thanksgiving Day.

Monday Funny

Published by Laura under School

Today during our writing time at school, my modeled writing for the students was about my run on Saturday with my friend, Laine.  I was about halfway through the story when one of my students in the back blurted out, “Is your friend really boring since her name is Lame?”

The Dairy Godmother is custard place that has doggie treats. There were several dogs outside waiting for their treats. Olivia loved her squirrel treat and she made a couple of new friends!

The birthday girl says, “Mommy, enough with the pictures. I do not want to have my picture taken again!”

“Ok, fine. One more, but I am only showing half my face!”

Can’t Get Enough

Some of you might remember that I am supposed to run a marathon this week. Thanks to some irritated tendons on the top of my foot and a cold that has lingered for a couple of weeks, that is not going to happen. I decided it’s best to skip this race and be ready for Spring races and next year’s Fall races.

Tonight my running buddies and I made a plan for our Spring and Fall running seasons:

March: Shamrock Half Marathon (Virginia Beach)

April: Country Music City Marathon (Nashville)

October/November: possibly the ING NYC Marathon… if not  NYC, we’ll do Niagra Falls (Ontario) OR (definitely not AND) Marine Corps Marathon (DC)

CAN’T WAIT!!!

West Wing Tour

white-house-tour

Last night I got to go on a tour of the West Wing of the White House. One of my running friends is an attorney and is on assignment at the White House right now. She is quite the tour guide.  It was a great experirence. We saw Robert Gibbs. I failed to mention this previously, but one time when I was out running with my running buddies, we saw Rahm Emanuel. Back to the West Wing tour. I don’t have many pictures because pictures are not allowed inside. I really liked that though because it was more about the in the moment experience instead of trying to document the occasion.

On the walls of the hallways in the West Wing there are a lot of pictures and these pictures are changed weekly. There is a photographer that follows the President everywhere. There is one hallway that leads to the Vice-President’s office that has pictures of the VP, but the others are dedicated to the President. One of my favorite pictures I saw last night was a picture of the President and a little African-American boy in the Oval Office. The President was leaning down for the little boy to touch his head. The story behind the picture is that the little boy asked the President if the President’s head was like his.  That picture was powerful for me because I will never forget on inaguaration day this time around, when I watched the inaguaration with my students, I could look at every one of them and say, “It could be you someday.”

Long Lost Project

This is a cross-stitching project I started about 10 years ago. It’s been almost that long since I have worked on it. I am determined to finish it, so I got it out Friday night thinking I’d work on it for awhile. Well, I quickly realized why it’s been so long since I’ve worked on it. There are 17 DMC thread colors I need to purchase. It’s kind of hard to work on a project I don’t have the materials for! I did get to work on the bottom of Santa’s coat Friday night. It has been such a long time since I have cross-stitched! I really enjoyed it. I’ll have to go to the craft store soon to get the thread so I can finish this.

When the cross-stitching part is complete, the pieces will be transformed into pillows. That part I will pay someone else to do! Hopefully next Christmas we’ll have three pillows!

Confession

Published by Laura under Home is Where the Heart is

When Richard and I first got married, we decided not to get cable. I didn’t have it in my apartment and he didn’t have it in his apartment (neither one of us are TV people), so it just made sense that we wouldn’t get it when we combined households. As a matter of fact, when we lived in Little Rock, we didn’t even have a TV in the living room (which blew my students’ minds) or our bedroom (guest room only). For some reason, when we moved to DC, Richard decided we should get cable.  I know it made sense at the time–maybe something having to do with the internet or something–I don’t know, but nevertheless, we now have cable. I love having cable for a few reasons 1) Andy Griffith, 2) Friends/Seinfeld, 3) The Office, 4) College Football 5) MUSIC CHANNELS. I love the music channels. My favorite is the Soft Rock station.

I also need to tell you that since Richard and I got married, I have stuck to very hard and fast rules about celebrating holidays. I want to fully recognize Thanksgiving and enjoy that season before getting into Christmas. Our Christmas tree does not go up until after Thanksgiving (we at least wait until the kitchen is clean from the Thanksgiving meal). I do not allow anything Christmas-y to go on until after Thanksgiving. It takes a lot of restraint (for both of us actually).

This is where the confession comes in. For at least the last month I have been dying to listen to Christmas music. I ran across my Jim Brickman Christmas CD and was so tempted to listen to it, but I resisted and felt really proud of myself. Last weekend, I turned on the Soft Rock station on our cable and guess what? Y’all will not believe this (unless it has happened to you, too): THEY WERE PLAYING CHRISTMAS MUSIC! I was so excited! I mean I had not voluntarily turned on Christmas music, it was a complete accident and the Soft Rock people were twisting my arm to listen to “The Little Drummer Boy”. After one song I made myself turn it off. This weekend, however, I have to admit I turned it on voluntarily. I didn’t like the Christmas music they had on the Soft Rock channel, so I even went as far to turn it to the Sounds of the Seasons channel. That’s getting in deep. I don’t know if I can quit listening now. I may need an intervention in order to survive between now and after Thanksgiving. This music makes me want to put the Christmas tree up!

Double-Date Night

After a month of being extremely busy and having very little couple time, Richard and I finally got to go on a real date! We went to a French restaurant in DC (Bistrot Du Coin) with our dear friends. Our wait was well worth the meal and the fun we had together. Any time we get to spend with Jim and Brenda is an absolute treat. Jim is one of Richard’s co-workers–they work hard and play hard! I am so thankful for Jim and Brenda.

The food was as good as the company! We had mussels which was a first for me. Jim says if they’re closed, do not pry them open. For my entree, I ordered salmon with portabella mushrooms and asparagus. OH MY WORD. When I was halfway finished, I told Brenda I wasn’t even hungry any more but could not stop eating because it was so delicious. She had the same problem with the chicken dish she ordered.  For once, the girls weren’t really into ordering dessert, but the boys both ordered chocolate mousse and, of course, I had a bite.

It was a wonderful evening and we’ll definitely have to go back to Bistrot Du Coin!
