Happy Thanksgiving!

I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving! This year I have been as excited about Thanksgiving as I typically am about Christmas! I feel like Monday (when I go back to work) is a long way away! Hopefully the break won’t go by too quickly!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING

Turkey Craft Fun

Published by Laura under Artsy-Crafty, School

We’ve been working on the most wonderful craft in first grade! This is what we’re making. I divided the students into two groups. On the first day, one group painted and the other group decorated feathers. Then on the second work day, we switched. Each student painted his/her turkey and decorated 7 feathers (copied and cut out by yours truly). On our first work day I didn’t have the newspaper to protect the desks (which really didn’t bother me). The art teacher stopped by today and offered the newspaper. I think by the time it was time to clean up, the painters had painted as much on the newspaper as they had on their turkeys! We all had FUN!

I noticed in these pictures that our Mr.Penguin who is supposed to be their timeout buddy by the door in the blue chair somehow got stuck high up on our wall. It was probably like that all day and I am just now seeing it.

This was such a fun Thanksgiving craft! I highly recommend it!

These 20 little people in these pictures are on my list of blessings!

CA Part 5

Published by Laura under Travel

I realized tonight that I never finished posting about our trip to CA! I know you’ve been sitting at your computer waiting, so here is more on our trip!

We loved San Diego! From the moment we got there people could not have been more friendly. It was a very safe, friendly, and clean city. We will definitely be making a return trip! While in San Diego, Richard attended the American Public Health Association conference and I did the “tourist” thing.

On our first day there, I got on the ferry and went to Coronado. It is a beautiful place! While I was there I shopped some and took a long walk along the water. There is a great view of the San Diego skyline from Coronado. After I visited Coronado for a few hours, I took the ferry back over to San Diego where I went on the Seals Harbor Tour. While on the tour, I got to get an up close look at sea lions!

That night, Richard and I went back to Coronado to eat at Candelas on the Bay. The food was scrumptious and we could not have asked for better service. The view of the San Diego skyline from our table was to die for.

I have more from our trip to share, but I’ll save that for another post.

Thanksgiving Songs and Poems

Published by Laura under School

Here are a few fun Thanksgiving songs and poems that my students enjoy! A friend who taught across the hall from me a few years ago shared these with me. She and another teacher we taught with helped me stuff my files full of great helps like this! I am so thankful I was with both of them my first years of teaching!

Sailing on the Mayflower (Tune: Row, Row, Row Your Boat)

Sail, sail, sail the Mayflower; slowly Across the sea; Merry, merrily, merrily, merrily; Pilgrims now are free.

Thanksgiving Day (Tune: Are You Sleeping?)

Sweet cranberries, apple cider; Pumpkin pie, pumpkin pie; Turkey’s in the oven; Company is coming; Thanksgiving Day. Thanksgiving Day

Turkey, Turkey (Tune: Twinkle Twinkle Little Star)

Turkey, turkey look at you; Please be careful what you do.; Thanksgiving Day is almost here; We eat turkey every year; Go and hide out in the woods; We’ll eat pizza like we should!

I Thought the Day Would Never Come

Yesterday morning I went to Starbucks and before I knew it my drink was being poured into a REGULAR cup. There were STACKS AND STACKS of holiday cups just waiting to be enjoyed by some lucky customer. I had forgotten to beg for one again. Nevertheless I enjoyed my drink. A little while later that morning, my friend came into Yarn Mart and guess what she had in her hand? You got it! A HOLIDAY Starbucks cup. I asked her what she had to do to get that and she said, “They just gave it to me.” Yeah right.

Last night Richard and I went to Starbucks. I finally got a holiday cup—and I didn’t even have to beg for it! They just gave it to me out of the goodness in their hearts (just like my friend said they would). I guess I looked pitiful. Or maybe I was wearing a sign that said, “This is the 5th time I’ve been to starbucks in the last 3 days and I have YET to hold a holiday cup in my hands!!” It was all  hoped it would be!

Potholders and Lattes

These are the potholders I knitted this week. I felted them last night, so they look a little bit different now. They are still drying! I am really pleased with how they turned out. Today I knitted a neck warmer out of yarn made from polar fleece fabric. I really like it, too! I will get a lot of use out of both the potholders and the neckwarmer. Tonight I think I am going to work on putting the fringe on the purple scarf/shawl I’ve been working on.

We went on a Starbucks date earlier tonight which was a lot of fun. I got the Eggnog Latte which was very tasty. All week I’ve been excited because Starbucks is now using their holiday cups. However, on Wednesday when I went in for my Vanilla Latte I didn’t get a holiday cup and I didn’t get one tonight either! Everyone else in there except for me had a holiday cup. That’s what I get for being excited. I could have asked for one, but I was really too lazy to get up again.

I’m off to watch Seinfeld!

Thanksgiving Craft Idea

Published by Laura under Artsy-Crafty, School

This turkey craft idea may just be one of the cutest ones I’ve seen in awhile! Forunately, our school has a great partnership with a local Methodist church and I have some volunteers to help me with the bags and plates. They’ll do steps 1-3 for me and my students and I will do the rest together! I cannot wait to see how these turn out!

CA Part 4 + Some Knitting News

Published by Laura under Artsy-Crafty, Travel

I am intentionally trying to have more down time this week. I was definitely successful tonight. I have been sitting here in my comfy chair in front of our fireplace since about 4:00 this afternoon. All I have done is knit and work on my Bible study. It has been fabulous. Believe it or not, until Saturday, it had been a week since I had picked up my knitting needles! Tonight I finished a wool scarf and a purple shawl/scarf. I started working on a felted Christmas potholder. I know the potholder sounds lame, but I made some felted potholders earlier in my knitting career and I really enjoy them and use them often, so now I am making some to use for Christmas for fun!

Here are some more pictures from our California trip. I hope you enjoy them!

From Olvera Street we ventured over to Richard Nixon’s library. The setting of his was not quite as majestic as Reagan’s, but the Nixon library had more meat to it as far as the actual presidency goes. The white house above is Richard Nixon’s birthplace which we were able to tour. The helicopter Richard is in front of is the Marine One from the Nixon administration. I think Richard sort of looks like Nixon. My husband is one of the funniest people I know.

Unfortunately we had to rush through the
Nixon library (2 hours), but for good reason. My sweet, romantic husband planned to take me on a drive down the Pacific Coast Highway at sunset in a convertible. He planned this months in advance and it was very special! We drove from the Nixon library to San Diego. That’s all for now on our CA trip!

Hopefully later this week I will have
pictures of my knitting projects to share and I will definitely have more on our
trip.
