Before and After

Yesterday I undertook a little project. I painted our kitchen. Richard did the taping and I painted. I really like the new color. Today Richard asked me if I might spent a little more time in the kitchen now that I have fresh paint on the walls! Ha. He also bought me a TV for the kitchen and Mastering the Art of French Cooking. Do you agree that he’s hinting??

I do plan to cook tonight. I’m not sure what, but I do want to cook. Apparently his “hints” are working. Maybe I’ll even use Mastering the Art of French Cooking tonight for the first time!

P.S. I realize these pictures are blury. Our camera has absolutely had it.

P.S.S. I also realize that I haven’t posted Florida pictures yet. My technology coordinator (aka Richard) is working on it.

A Bedtime Story

Published by Laura under Artsy-Crafty, Puppy

Last summer I got the bright idea to make a new bed for Olivia. The bed I made last summer was to go in her crate. At first, she didn’t like it and actually the first few nights after I made it, we had to take her new bed out and replace it with her old, chewed up beach towels so she’d quite crying and go to sleep. Eventually, she came to love her new bed.

When I made her new bed, I made thee bed and then made several covers to go over the bed so I could switch out the cover and wash it, etc

Olivia has gone through a few changes regarding where she sleeps since we moved out of our apartment. From the time we got her up until February, she slept in her crate. Even when Richard and I lived apart because of work, Olivia slept in her crate. At the end of January, we moved. Our box springs wouldn’t fit up our staircase, so for a few weeks our mattress was on the floor. Olivia could hop on and off the bed. This resulted in her starting off sleeping with us and most often she’d move herself into her crate during the night. After the snow cleared away, we were able to get out and buy a split box spring that would fit up our staircase. Olivia could no longer hop on and off the bed with ease. The crate was still in our bedroom, but she started sleeping with us. Eventually this led to the crate being taken apart and stored in the basement.

After awhile, I realized I wasn’t sleeping well because of the dog. We never take her collar off, so every wiggle creates a jingle and she loves to snuggle and stretch out at the same time which means she nearly takes up as much space as a third person. This resulted in me practically hanging off the bed so the DOG could have enough space to sleep!

I finally had enough and decided that she’d sleep on her bed beside our bed. I assumed we’d have to go through a few nights of crying and restlessness on her part, but that I was willing to do it so things would be better in the long run. Well, to my surprise, on night #1 of Olivia Sleeping Solo Boot Camp, she put her paws up for me to put her on our bed and I said, “Livvy girl sleeps over here” and I led her over to her bed and SHE LAID DOWN AND WENT TO SLEEP without a peep! Most nights she still tries to talk me into putting her on our bed, but then she willingly goes over and snuggles down on her own bed. Such a big girl!

This time on my bed-making adventure, I decided to use a couple of more “serious” fabrics so we can have something not too loud to leave out in our bedroom all the time. The more “fun” fabrics will be used for her beds for the back of the car and her doghouse outside.

Last time I used stitch witchery. That involved lots of time, pinning and ironing. This time I decided to try fabric glue. I LOVE the stuff. I’ll never use stitch witchery again. I whipped up the beds and covers in no time! Of course, watching Julie and Julia while I was working helped!

I actually bought the blue fabric thinking it would be cute if we do get to adopt a boy dog. We haven’t heard a word from the Westie rescue. I completed the application a couple of weeks ago and then emailed them a week or so later confirming that they had received it, but still no word. We’re disappointed, but still waiting to see what happens. The organization is run by volunteers  and they get hundreds of applications, so I’m trying to be understanding and patient. Even if a little boy dog doesn’t get to use the blue fabric, I think it suits Olivia, too.

As if making beds and bed covers for my dog isn’t bad enough, I decided she needs a little luggage tag for when we need to take a bag places for her. I ordered it from here, The Monogram Marketplace on Etsy. I got her name and a doggie bone (in light pink and green) on the front and our phone numbers on the back. I can hardly wait to get it in.

It’s kind of starting to sound like it might be a good idea for school to start.

Enjoying My At Home Time

Last week I decided I was tired of doing my chores during the weekend and I developed a new cleaning schedule. I do one or two chores each day during the week so my weekend is free. This was the first week I implemented the new plan and it has worked! I have not known what to do with myself today! It’s been WONDERFUL!

As of next Saturday, marathon training season will be in full swing! I ran with my running friends this morning. It was so good to see them and get caught up. We haven’t consistently been running together since just before Christmas, so we were all glad to be together again!!

I’ve gotten into the habit of taking Olivia to our neighborhood dog park almost every day. Normally, when I take her she acts like she doesn’t know me except for her occasional “run by” to say, “Hey, mom look how fast I am…”. However, the last several times I have taken her to the park, she has basically ignored all of the other dogs there and has wanted to play ball with me instead of sociazing and chasing other dogs. I feel so special that she’s choosing me over the other fun she could be having! I think I’m up for Doggie Mama of the year!  ha.

I have finally made major headway in our backyard. We had all of this weird growth between our rocks and the fence and amongst the rocks. I am not sure what it was. We were told we’d never get rid of it, so of course I had to get rid of it. Long story short, I dug up every root which required me taking our stepping stones and rocks apart. It was a big job for me and I had very sore hands to show for it, but the yard looks so much better with that stuff GONE! The next job I have in the yard is to rake all of the little “propeller” things our maple tree so graciously gave us.  I’ll have to post some pictures soon of our yard! We have a little bird nest in our vine above our back door.

I think I’m in a movie watching mood tonight. The only problem is that I don’t really have a knitting project to work on while I watch. I suppose I’ll have to start something! I have three friends who are expecting, so maybe a baby hat is in order! I think I’d like to either watch Amelia or It’s Complicated (or maybe one of the Holocaust films I have from Netflix).

HAPPY WEEKEND!

The Latest Knitting News

Last night I stumbled upon a knitting pattern for coffee cup sleeves. I have a lot of yarn in my stash that has been begging to be used for just such a project! So far, I have made three and am planning to knit more. I have a knitting stitch pattern book out and am using these little projects as an opportunity to play with some new knitting stitches.

The story behind me having this Starbucks cup is a long one and involves lots of espresso on our kitchen floor this morning. Maybe I’ll tell that story sometime soon. But for now, here are the sleeves I have knitted so far (knitting stitch, yarn):

I’ve Been Knitting!

Published by Laura under Artsy-Crafty

nashua-wooly-stripes

Since I made the list of knitting projects I want to complete this year, I have made a point to knit more. I haven’t been knitting every night, but close to it! I may only knit a few rows each night, but it’s better than nothing. I have had this Wooly Stripes yarn for almost a year and have finally put it to use. I am not sure it’s really good use, but I used it. I knitted a scarf in seed stitch and I’m working on a matching hat. It’s almost finished, but the sad news is that I am out of yarn. I am venturing out to a local yarn shop today in hopes that they carry Nashua. Can you believe I’ve lived here for 7 months and haven’t stepped foot inside any of our local yarn shops? I think I just miss Yarn Mart too much. I am fighting back tears even typing about Yarn Mart–pitiful! BUT now I am desperate for this skein of yarn and am forcing myself to go!

Last night we watched what is possibly the worst movie ever made: Mary and Rhoda. It’s about a reunion between Mary and Rhoda. Richard and I both love Mary Tyler Moore, but this movie was horrible. I was glad to have these socks to work on!

fetching-project-1

Last but not least I finally finished this Fetching project. One glove is shorter than the other. I am hoping no one will look at both of my hands at the same time. The yarn I used is Calm Wool. It’s 40% wool, 30% camel and 30% alpaca. Quite honestly, it’s possibly the scratchiest fiber I’ve ever put near my body. The scarf feels scratchy on my neck, but the gloves don’t bother me. The color is gorgeous, but next time I will definitely choose a softer fiber.

I can’t decide which project I’ll tackle next. I should probably think about that before I go to the yarn shop!

Easy As Pie

Published by Laura under Artsy-Crafty, What's For Dinner?

I really didn’t mean to go so long without blogging. Things have not really been abnormally hectic, I just have not gotten around to blogging! Last night I spent some time working on a knitting project (fingerless gloves). The name of the pattern is Fetching. I can’t believe how long it’s been since I’ve worked on the gloves. The matching scarf is complete, so it’s high time I get the gloves finished, too! I’m finished talking about knitting for now. This is not what I’m supposed to be blogging about.

So what’s easy as pie you wonder? Well, this summer I had cable TV for the first time in years and I watched my fair share of the Food Network. After awhile, I got tired of it though and quit watching. So, now we’re back to paying a lot of money for cable and we never watch TV. Ok back to the point again.

While I was watching the Food Network, I learned a really easy way to dice bell pepper. Here’s the easy way:

Favorite Ornaments

When I was in high school, I worked at a gift shop in our town. I started buying Christmas ornaments there when I was in high school and throughout college, so I would have a collection when I got a tree of my own. The shop is closed now and I miss it to this day. Richard’s family has a tradition of buying an ornament each year, so he had an ornament for every year of his life when we married. When we went on our honeymoon, I decided to buy an ornament instead of a typical souvenir. I have continued this when we go anywhere of interest. We have ornaments from Mount Vernon, Monticello, New York City, the National Archives, and the Reagan Presidential Library. Of course now I am recalling places we’ve been where we should have bought an ornament and didn’t.

We have continued Richard’s family’s tradition of purchasing an ornament each year. We try to buy an ornament that tells something about our year. One year I bought Richard one that was a grilling apron with grilling tools and last year I bought him one that was a gingerbread house because we made gingerbread houses together.

This is the ornament we got when we went to NYC this summer for our birthdays. We rode in what felt like 14 million cabs, so we thought this ornament was appropriate.

This is Richard’s ornament for this year. We have watched our fair share of The Office over the years.

I got this ornament when Mom and I went to the beach last summer. If Santa had been there when we were, he would have needed more clothes on than this!

I got this ornament at Celebrations (the gift shop where I worked) while I was in college. I bought this in memory of an elderly friend of my family’s, Mrs. Gertrude.

One year I got into making Christmas ornaments. I made this one for our first Christmas together.

This is the ornament from our Honeymoon (St. John).

I must admit this might be my all time favorite. I have this green down vest that I’ve had for 8 years and I wear it all the time. Richard makes fun of me because I wear it so much. This little ornament is just very “me”.

I currently work in an international neighborhood school. I have students from all over the world in my class. These children have changed me so much that I thought it appropriate to get an ornament this year that represents them.

You get a two-for-one in this image. The Razorback ornament in the back was given to me by a parent from the school where I did my internship during my master’s program. It’s a little damaged from being wrapped in tissue paper, but I still put it on my tree every year anyway.

The second ornament is one I got at a store in DeWitt, AR one Thanksgiving. This ornament inspired my classroom Christmas tree (which I no longer have). For my first 4 years of teaching I had a white tree, with white lights with multi-colored ornaments. The kids loved it!
